{Do you see the crazy ingrowns on my legs? This was the main reason why I wanted to get laser hair removal!}
I have been wanting to get laser hair removal on my legs for such a long time now. I have always waxed my legs but about a year ago, for some reason, I started to shave and it caused me to have annoying little black dots {aka. ingrowns} all over my legs which I hated so much. This was the main reason why I wanted to get laser hair removal on my legs. Ofcourse, I went to my favorite place in NYC, Satori Laser. They were so kind to let me film my entire experience and even answer some of your most asked questions.
Some FAQ’s:
1) What exactly is laser hair removal? How does it work?
Laser hair removal beams highly concentrated light into hair follicles without hurting the surrounding skin. Laser only works on dark pigmentation to destroy hair follicles. It’s an initial investment comparing to waxing and shaving. However in the long term, laser hair removal is much more cost effective. It also treats ingrown hair caused by waxing and shaving.
2) How many laser treatments will I need and how far apart are they scheduled?
Six is the minimum of the sessions for starters. For hormonal areas, underarms, face etc, you will need more than 6 sessions. Especially for face areas, sometimes it requires a long term maintenance. The sessions are 4-5 weeks apart.
3) Are some people/skin tones better candidates for laser hair removal than others?
People with light blonde, red and grey hair are not allowed to do laser hair removal. Laser effects are based on the contrast of hair and skin. People with pale skin and black hair may reach to 100% hair removal as a result. However if the contrast is not as big, laser hair removal can achieve 85% hair reduction with relatively more sessions.
4) Is it permanent?
In my experience, it is not permanent but it does reduce hair about 85-90%. I personally had to go back and get touch ups once a year.
5) How should I prepare myself before and after treatment?
– NO tanning of any form, including tanning beds and/or self-tanners, for at least 3 week prior to your appointment.
– Avoid sun exposure for at least 3 weeks prior to your treatment. Failure to do so may cause scarring and/or hyper pigmentation. Sun exposure will affect the results and can possibly cause scarring, hyper pigmentation, and laser burns which can possibly be permanent.
– No tweezing, threading, waxing, epilating, bleaching or usage of Nair for at least 3 weeks prior to your treatment.
– The area to be treated should be freshly cleaned, left with no makeup, deodorant, lotions, creams, antiperspirants etc.
– Unless otherwise stated by technician, SHAVE the areas to be treated the night before or morning of your appointment.
– Revise medication history with technician before treatment. If you are on strong medications, please consult with your doctor if you can do laser hair removal. Reschedule your appointment if needed.
6) How much does it cost?
Cost will depend place to place. I highly recommend to NOT fall for “deals” and go somewhere with great reviews. You can find Satori’s pricing HERE. If you mention that Arshia sent you, you can get 10% off a single session or 1 treatment for underarms for $35.00! Offer ends 11/15/15
7) What are the side effects/medical risks of laser hair removal?
It may cause redness and swelling but the skin will calm down in 20 minutes – 2 hours. Another side effects is hyper pigmentation. That’s why we take precautions to make sure that customers are not wearing makeup if they are doing the face; they are not tanned or taking medications before doing treatments. Unqualified machines and inappropriate usage may burn the skin.
8) Is it true that laser hair removal can cause more hair growth/thicker hair?
If the hair is too fine to see, or the color is very light compared to skin tone, we don’t recommend to do laser hair removal treatment. Laser hair removal will have amazing results on thick hair and ingrown hair. After each treatment, you can see that the hair grows much finer and slower.
{Thank you to Satori laser for providing most of the answers above!}
In my experience, the pain level depends person to person and the part of the body you will be getting treated on. Face is obviously going to be a lot more sensitive than other parts. From my experience the face does hurt, underarms is a bit uncomfortable but nothing crazy and the legs literally did not hurt at all.
